Qualified Intermediary (QI)
In order to make it easier for investors with holdings in U.S securities and Swedish depository receipts with underlying U.S. securities, the custodian bank or the securities institution should apply to the IRS to become a Qualified Intermediary (QI). Investors at an institution that has become a QI have the opportunity to qualify for reduced U.S tax at the time of dividend payment.Account operators and nominees that apply as QI will need to report information to IRS and, in some cases, to Euroclear Sweden.
